Scott K. Smith

Scott K. Smith lives in the lower elevations of the Sierra Nevada mountains. He has always thought that since we are not being all our beings, nothing is more important than thinking about ontology. Our beings, after all, represent Life itself.

Ontologically
Insightful Writers

I would place D. H. Lawrence at the top of the list of ontologically sensitive writers and R. D. Laing second. Lawrence’s had a deep interest in all three ontological areas: he wanted to become all his realself, he wanted to develop realself-to-realself relationships, and he wanted to become all his realself in the natural world. Laing’s great contribution was his sensitivity to the realself feelings and thoughts in others and to his awareness that those feelings and thoughts are ontological and not pathological.

It is interesting that the most ontologically sensitive and insightful writers lived mostly in the UK.

Assimilaion and Insight

Why wasn’t all of this being or realself business discovered by a doctor or a Ph.D.?

The main reason is that doctors and Ph.D.s have let themselves become too assimilated into the socialself world to ever become conscious of their realself. In most cases, to be successful in the socialself world means that a person has to become the self of that world, and doing this inevitably prevents people from becoming conscious of their realself. Men and women who are living fully in the socialself world will, on their own, never become conscious of the realself because that self does not exist there.

Ontological Sources

28 of the main books and articles cited in the Being and Life Series are described on the ontological sources page. Many of the world’s most ontologically sensitive and insightful writers are included in this list.
